Jose Angel Lozano - Biography

About the Artist

Jose Angel Lozano

Jose Angel Lozano is an interdisciplinary artist born in Matamoros, Mexico, based in Tampa and the Rio Grande Valley, deeply committed to fostering the arts within his community. Lozano's current work centers on interactive, conceptual, and material-based practices, inviting viewers to become active participants in approachable experiences that spark curiosity, reflection, and connection.

Central to his practice is a keen engagement with color theory and values — exploring how shifts in light and dark reveal the evolving nature of meaning within his subjects. He treats found and gifted objects as canvases, drawing on their inherent histories, textures, and imperfections to evoke nostalgia and investigate the dynamic interplay between material and color. Through this experimental approach, modest everyday objects — nails, coins, words, and other overlooked materials — recur as symbols of labor, value, and connection, reminding us that meaning can live in the ordinary.

Since 2019, his work has been exhibited across Texas, reflecting his commitment to accessible art. His career began with an academic foundation that continues to inform both his studio practice and his engagement with community. Lozano is currently pursuing his MFA in Studio Art from the University of South Florida, where he continues to grow his interdisciplinary practice and serves as a Teaching Assistant for the Foundations department. He is also a dedicated board member of the BTX Art League, formerly the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art, where he previously served as Exhibition Coordinator.
